This lovely artwork, by nineteenth-century French painter, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, depicts a mother holding her child and a lamb.
The young woman stands on some green grass beside a dirt path. Behind her, and to her right, are some dark green trees. In the top right of the painting, some blue mountains and the blue sky are visible.
The mother has white skin and golden-brown hair, which shows beneath her veil. She wears a long white dress, a cream-colored veil, and a cream-colored cloth tied about her waist. Her bare, left foot shows beneath her dress. The mother holds her baby at her right side and the lamb at her left side. She stands sideways in relation to the viewer of the painting, inclining her head to her right side, looking down at the child.
The child appears to be about six months old. He has white skin and golden hair. He wears a white cloth around his waist. The baby rests his head and left hand on his mother’s breast. He holds his right arm out at his right side. The baby’s body faces the viewer of the painting.
The lamb is white, and about the same size as the baby. He places his front legs over the woman’s left arm. His head and body face the right side of the painting.
