Christ Carrying His Cross, by Bergognone

by Isabella Childs January 05, 2021

road to Calvary

This is a portrayal of Jesus Christ carrying His cross, by Italian Renaissance painter, il Bergognone.

The image is narrow and rectangular in shape. Christ’s figure fills most of the painting.

The Savior wears a bright red robe and a blue cloak around His body. Christ’s cloak has a gold border. Our Lord has white skin, light brown eyes, shoulder-length medium brown hair, and a beard. A patterned gold halo surrounds His head. His body points towards the left side of the painting but the Savior turns His head so that He appears to be looking at the viewer of the painting. Christ's left foot, which is bare, shows beneath His garments. Jesus holds His cross on His right shoulder with both hands.

Jesus stands on bare, sandy brown earth. Behind Christ, on the left side of the painting, is a canal of pale blue water. A row of white buildings stands on the right side of the canal. Behind Christ, partly visible on the right side of the painting, is a cluster of dark green trees.

The sky, which makes up the background of the painting, is a pale blue. There is some gold paint in the shape of an arch at the top of the painting.
