St. Augustine

In this depiction of Saint Augustine, by Champaigne, the great Doctor of the Church composes his writings on Catholic doctrine and philosophy.

St. Augustine is depicted as a man of about fifty years of age, with medium skin, thin gray hair, and a beard. He wears gold vestments over an alb and blue shoes. On the vestments are colorful images of Jesus Christ and the apostles. There is yellow light behind the saint’s head. St. Augustine holds a flaming heart in his left hand and a writing quill in his right hand. He looks towards his right at a circle of light in the air. In the circle of light is the word “veritas”, "truth".

St. Augustine is surrounded by books. He leans his left arm on a large, open book, which is placed on a table beside him. At his right side, there is a large, open book on a tall stand. His right foot is placed on a book of heresies on the floor. There is another heretical book on the floor as well as a heretical scroll. In the background of the painting, there is a dark green curtain and a dark bookcase.
