In this painting of the fall of the rebel angels by Giordano, Saint Michael casts the wicked angels from Heaven.
The Archangel is depicted as a young man with white skin and shoulder-length, golden hair. Michael wears a blue tunic, which is in the style of a Roman soldier’s tunic. He also wears a pale red cloak, which is wrapped around his left shoulder, and tall, blue sandals. A golden helmet, with a small cross on it near the forehead, and with blue and white feathers crowning it, sits on his head. The Archangel has large white wings, which are stretched out behind him. St. Michael raises a flaming sword with his right hand and holds out his left arm at his left side. He inclines his head to his left side, looking down at Lucifer while stepping on the demon’s neck with his right foot.
Lucifer is depicted as a naked man with small, dark wings. He falls from Heaven, his body outstretched and his left hand raised to defend himself from Michael. With his left foot, Lucifer crushes the head of another demon, also depicted as a naked man. Other angels, all depicted as naked men, some with pointed ears and horns, fall from Heaven beside Lucifer and in the background of the painting.
The clouds surrounding the falling angels are black. There is reddish light near the black clouds. Behind St. Michael, at the top of the painting, is a white cloud and yellow light behind the cloud. There are cherubs near the white cloud.
