This image depicts a story of the 4th-century saint, Nicholas of Bari. Under cover of darkness, Saint Nicholas throws gold through the window of a poor nobleman to help him supply dowries for his three daughters. The story gradually evolved into the Christmas tradition of Santa Claus. Artwork by G. Macchietti.
