This is a portrait of Pope Pius VII, the nineteenth-century Italian Pope who worked to make peace with Napoleon and the French Revolution. He released the famous Concordat of 1801 with Napoleon, which established complete reorganization of the dioceses and declared Roman Catholicism France’s chief religion. Artwork by G. David.
